Research!America Alarmed by Proposed Budget Cuts
Research!America released the following statement today from its President and CEO Mary Woolley:
Research!America is alarmed by the major cuts to non-defense discretionary (NDD) funding House Appropriations Chair Tom Cole (R-OK) announced earlier today. The decision to cut the allocation that funds the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other research agencies as our nation confronts such massive health threats as Alzheimer’s, the opioid crisis heightened by the Fentanyl epidemic, and maternal mortality, is chilling. A recent national public opinion survey commissioned by Research!America shows that 61% of Americans want Congress to invest more taxpayer dollars to advance science and technology. Cutting funding needed for NIH and other R&D agencies goes in the opposite direction. If our nation wants to defeat diseases that are robbing Americans of hope, health, and time; if we want to grow jobs and our economy; if we want to preempt the next pandemic and stop our youth from losing their lives to opioids and mental illness; we must put our money where our mouth is.
