The BUILDERS OF SCIENCE AWARD recognizes distinguished scientists who have provided inspiration and determination in building or re-building an outstanding home for research. Eligible candidates for the award are highly accomplished medical, health, and scientific research administrators, scientists, and other leaders who have demonstrated their commitment to research advocacy. Individuals who have substantially revitalized an existing institution are also eligible.

Gary H. Gibbons, MD, is Director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). As Director of NHLBI, he has enhanced, expanded, and accelerated the transformative research of this premier Institute in cross-cutting sectors including data science, community-engaged research, women’s health, climate and health, and the translation of scientific discoveries in heart, lung, blood, and sleep into better health and health care for all people across our nation and around the world. Dr. Gibbons provides leadership for several NIH initiatives including the NIH Community Engagement Alliance (CEAL); the Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery (RECOVER) initiative; the Implementing a Maternal health and PRegnancy Outcomes Vision for Everyone (IMPROVE) initiative; and the NIH Climate Change and Health Initiative. He received the 2021 Service to America Medal for his leadership of CEAL.

Dr. Gibbons is also the founding director of the Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI) at the Morehouse School of Medicine, positioning CVRI as a national leader in pioneering innovations to improve cardiovascular health in underserved populations.

Dr. Gibbons earned his B.A. from Princeton University, graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Medical School, and completed his residency and cardiology fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He has been a faculty member at Stanford University, Harvard Medical School, and Morehouse School of Medicine, where he was founding director of the Cardiovascular Research Institute.
