The BUILDING THE FOUNDATION AWARD recognizes one or more individuals whose basic research discoveries have played a pivotal role in advancing public health. This award is part of the suite of Outstanding Achievement in Public Health Awards, generously supported by Johnson & Johnson.

Barney S. Graham is an infectious diseases physician and scientist. He has a BA from Rice University, MD from the University of Kansas, and PhD from Vanderbilt University. He retired as Deputy Director of the NIAID Vaccine Research Center in 2021 and is now Professor and Director of the David Satcher Global Health Equity Institute at Morehouse School of Medicine. He is an inventor of vaccines and monoclonal antibodies approved for human use to prevent or treat RSV, COVID-19, and Ebola. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, has received multiple awards for advancement of science, and has been recognized in 2021 as a Time Magazine Hero of the Year and in 2024 as one of the Time100 most influential in health.
