The HERBERT PARDES FAMILY AWARD FOR NATIONAL LEADERSHIP IN ADVOCACY FOR RESEARCH recognizes individuals who, like Dr. Pardes, have demonstrated distinguished academic leadership and sustained commitment to public engagement and advocacy for research. Individuals selected for this honor will be those who are highly regarded for their ability to communicate the value of research and innovation to a broad array of audiences, and who, by their example and active encouragement, have inspired others to do so. 

Barbara E. Bierer, MD, a hematologist-oncologist, is Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School (HMS). She leads the Multi-Regional Clinical Trials Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard, a research and policy center dedicated to strengthening global clinical research. She is the Director of SMART IRB, a US national platform for single-site IRB review of multisite trials, and director of Harvard Catalyst’s Regulatory Foundations, Ethics, and Law program, enabling the clinical trial enterprise from planning to data dissemination. She previously served as Senior Vice-President, Research, BWH, and founded the Brigham Research Institute, Brigham Innovation Hub, and Vivli, a center for global clinical trial data. Her non-profit activities and board memberships underscore her commitment to medicines development, health policy, and public health. She has authored over 300 publications.
